Elementary students at Bowmar and St. Francis Xavier held qualifying rounds for two district events — a spelling bee and a science fair. In the spelling bee, fifth-grader Justin Bell, left, reacts as sixth-grader Avery Parman spells “reduction” to win the Bowmar bee and the chance to represent the school at the district contest Feb. 5. Justin is the son of Leanthony and Juanita Bell, and Avery is the daughter of Pam and William Parman III. At left, Taylor DeRossette, foreground, and Jimbo Halford, both 11, check out a science project at St. Francis. About 130 pieces from first- through sixth-graders were entered. A total of 40 students will advance to the district fair, set for Feb. 24-25. Best in Fair was awarded to sixth-grader Caroline Webb, the daughter of Benjamin and Antisa Webb. Taylor is the son of Patrick DeRossette and Kelly Richards, and Jimbo is the son of Jimmy and Mary D. Halford.
