A convicted sex offender on probation from the state was charged with rape Wednesday in Vicksburg, police Sgt. Sandra Williams said.

John Lee Mayfield, 31, 3595 Mount Alban Road, was arrested at 3:58 p.m. for a rape at 12:48 p.m. in the 2700 block of Alcorn Drive, Williams said.

She said Mayfield had been in the Mississippi Department of Corrections for a conviction about which she could not be specific. She did say, however, that he was on probation and previously had been convicted of sex crimes.

He was arrested Wednesday after being identified by the victim who knew him, Williams said.

Mayfield was convicted March 25, 1996, of rape and kidnapping, and sentenced to serve six years in prison without parole, followed by five years of probation, Williams said. He was released Nov. 3, 2001, on the expiration of his sentence, she said.

His probation was revoked July 24, 2006, and he was sentenced to serve seven additional years in prison. The cause of the revocation was not clear.

Information about his subsequent release also was not available this morning.

In addition, Mayfield had been charged in 2005 with failing to re-register as a sex offender, Williams said. On that charge, he was sentenced to serve one year in prison followed by two years of probation.

All of Mayfield’s convictions have been in Warren County, Williams said.

Mayfield was in the Warren County Jail without bond this morning.
