Everything from heavy coats to light sweaters would have been appropriate through the week in Vicksburg. Highs were in the mid-70s on three days and in the low 40s on two. Lows dipped as far as 27 degrees. Rain was recorded on one day and measured .33 inch.

The Mississippi River fell sharply every day of the week, starting from a reading of 27.1 feet on the Vicksburg gauge and ending at 16.3 feet. The forecast was for 17.8 feet today.

Whether people who have prepaid for vaults, markers and burial services at Green Acres Memorial Park have simply lost their money remained the big question Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann said he couldn’t answer. Hosemann was in Warren County Chancery Court pursuing an order that the private cemetery’s owners replace or otherwise account for $373,000 a state investigation estimates is missing from a trust account.

Shawn Paul Sponholz died after being taken to River Region Medical Center with multiple stab wounds in his neck. Authorities said Sponholz, 50, was attacked in his Warriors Trail home and they were investigating, but no arrests were made.

Supervisors were undecided on a next step to take regarding enforcement of requirements imposed on property developers.

International Paper Company’s mill at Redwood and the DTE PetCoke facility in the E.W. Haining Industrial Center were listed as two of five charter enrollees statewide in a volunteer environmental stewardship and monitoring program of the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.

Vicksburg police responding to an alert from Louisiana authorities arrested a homicide suspect from Baton Rouge at the local bus station.

Police Capt. Jack Dowe retired after 25 years with the Vicksburg department.

A review of 15 months of records of the Vicksburg Housing Authority showed no abuse of federal funds, the Department of Housing and Urban Development said. The scrutiny follows the December arrest of Charles Jones Jr., maintenance and purchasing supervisor for VHA accused of having 2.2 pounds of cocaine shipped to him at work.

LeTourneau Technologies announced one oil rig construction project would be canceled and another mothballed. The company, which builds rigs in Vicksburg, cited oil market conditions.

Warren Central art students Lesa Jones and Magan Lovett were named Gold Key winners in a national competition, meaning their work will be shown in New York.

Lakesha Batty of Grove Street and Tiffany Keen of St. Francis were named secondary and elementary teachers of the year by the Chamber of Commerce and will receive $1,000 each. At the Chamber’s annual meeting, Ameristar Casino Hotel was named Businee of the Year and Sam Porter was named Ambassador of the Year.

VenuWorks Executive Director Larry Gawronski reported more bookings for the Vicksburg Convention Center in the first three months of this budget year than last year. A total of 56 rentals for the convention center and Vicksburg Auditorium, also managed by the company, were tallied.

Vicksburg officials said the city would not take place in preparedness drills for a Grand Gulf emergency unless the state agrees to underwrite costs.

James Stirgus Jr. and Joe Loviza attended their first board meetings as members of the Vicksburg Warren School District Board of Trustees. They were elected in November.

The transition to a new E-911 Dispatch Center was completed, meaning new digs for the 17 dispatchers on the consolidated staff. The move was in the planning and construction stages for three years.

In addition to Mr. Sponholz, deaths during the week included Adele Katz Dominick, Virginia Johnson Prevost, Lucinda Ware Wilson, Nichole Ann Taylor, Luvenia H. Ellis, Earl Barrett Batchelor, Margie Marie Rogers and Betty Jean Fife Wilson.
