Travelers had a team

I want to extend a sincere warm thank you to the individuals who made our first fifth and sixth grade school trip a total success. This positive experience would not have been possible if the Vicksburg Warren School District did not have a superior school board and a strong superintendent trio that is 100 percent committed to every student in the district receiving a quality education. Our district was very fortunate to have had Jerry Boland, Zelmarine Murphy, Tommy Shelton, Jan Daigre and Betty Tolliver as our governing school board for the 2007-2208 school term and Dr. James Price, Dr. John Walls, and Debra Hullum as our administrative staff.

The transportation department is always ready to go with a smile, and I would like to send a special thanks to the entire department and Fred Barnum for getting us to the airport at 4:50 a.m. and being there to pick us up at 1 a.m. This trip could never have taken place if it were not for all the dedication, planning, and groundwork of Alicia Sharp, VIS’s guidance counselor, or for the help of two chaperones, David Sharp, teacher, and Michael Williams, parent. To the parents of the 11 students who went on the trip, first, thank you for trusting me each week with one of your most blessed gifts, and, second, thank you for being a part of the VIS vision that our students will become productive, successful citizens due to the endless enrichment possibilities they are exposed to during their school years.

This small appreciation would not be complete if I did not include The Vicksburg Post and WJTV for their positive coverage of our story, and Mary Frances Warren for her spur-of-the-moment gratitude token she gave to the students to make the trip even brighter. Lastly, I want to thank the entire faculty and staff at Vicksburg Intermediate for being supportive throughout this process.

Parent appreciates help

My 15-year-old son was involved in a minor traffic accident lin Vicksburg on his way home after taking a make-up test.

We live and work in Port Gibson, so neither his father nor I were close enough to get to him quickly. He was very upset and nervous, called me and asked me what the number was for the Vicksburg Police Department. I was in my car at the time so I told him to call 911 and then call the insurance company.

A few minutes later he called back and a police officer, Dave Barnette, had arrived and told me he would take care of him so I wouldn’t have to drive the 45 miles for such a minor event.  My son’s basketball coach, Mrs. Bradley, stopped and helped him answer questions and several of his friends and classsmates from St. Aloysius stopped to comfort him. The ambulance driver could not get me, but got his father’s permission to refuse medical help. She was so nice and comforting to my son. Officer Barnette called Sunday to follow up and check on my son.

I have always been apprehensive about sending my son to school so far from home, but after the kindness and concern shown by the officials, school personnel and his friends from school and home, I feel perhaps he is not as far from home as I thought.
