Published 12:00 am Wednesday, February 11, 2009
Four Vicksburg students have been named STAR students for the 2008-2009 school year. STAR, which stands for Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition, is a yearly scholarship program sponsored by the Mississippi Economic Council and its M.B. Swayze Educational Foundation.
A STAR Student is the senior with the highest ACT score who has met the minimum requirements — at least a 25 on the college entrance exam and a 93 average. The average is gleaned from scores in the ninth, 10th, 11th and first-semester 12th grades in English, foreign language, math, science and social science.
The students will go on to compete for the top 20 STAR Student spots, called All-STAR Scholastic Scholars.
The top All-STAR scholar in the state will receive a $24,000 Kelly Gene Cook Sr. scholarship. The first runner-up will receive $20,000, and the second-runner up will receive $16,000.
As part of the STAR program, each student selects a teacher who has influenced his or her education. Each teacher of the All-STAR Scholastic Scholars will receive $500.
This year’s STAR recognition ceremony will be April 16 at Mississippi College.
