AARP shortens drivers course for seniors

Drivers 50 and older in Vicksburg are invited to driver’s education classes with a new turn.

“We used to spread the class over eight hours, sometimes on two days and sometimes all in one day,” said 73-year-old Bob Walters of Vicksburg, who has been teaching the classes for nine years. “Now AARP wants to do it all in one four-hour class.”

The next scheduled Driver Safety Program class is from noon until 4:30 March 23 at the Vicksburg Senior Center. The cost of the classes is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers.

The classes are limited to 35, but they average about 20, Walters said. He said instruction is limited to the classroom with videos, and a true-and-false test is given at the end of the session.

Many insurers, he said, offer various discounts to drivers who have passed the class.

The only teacher in Warren County, Walters also instructs drivers in Clinton.
