River City Heart Walk slated for March 28 at Riverfront Park

The River City Heart Walk will be March 28 at Riverfront Park.

The event will include children’s activities, a petting zoo and health screenings. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the walk will start at 9. Proceeds will benefit the American Heart Association.

Leftover inventory from the Clinton Community Nature Center’s annual native plant sale is available.

Poverty Point cranks up tram service again

Poverty Point State Historic Site will resume its daily tram tour Saturday. The service will run through October.

The tram will depart the parking lot at 9:30 and 11 a.m. and 12:30, 2 and 3:30 p.m. It seats 44 and is ADA accessible.

Park admission is $2 for adults and free for children younger than 12 and seniors older than 62.

Poverty Point is located in West Carroll Parish, east of Monroe on Louisiana 577.

Horse show set in West Monroe

The Louisiana Equine Council will host the third annual Louisiana Horse Expo March 13-15 at the Ike Hamilton Expo Center in West Monroe.

The expo will feature Joe Wolter, renowned horsemanship clinician, and Paul Daily, horse whisperer. Offerings will include the Greenwell Springs Youth Riders, Parade of Breeds, Ranch Horse Competition and Gaited Horse Show.

Expo hours will be from 3 to 8 p.m. March 13 and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. March 14-15. Admission is $5 for people older than 16 and free for children and Louisiana Equine Council members.

Blooms on exhibit at William Carey

William Carey University will present the exhibit Flourishing Blooms: Paintings by Tommie Rodgers in the Lucile Parker Gallery on the Hattiesburg campus.

It will run Thursday through April 2. An opening reception is set for 6 p.m. March 5.

Rodgers is a graduate of Jones County Junior College and the University of Southern Mississippi. Her work has been exhibited at the Meridian Museum of Art, George Ohr Arts and Cultural Center in Biloxi and Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock.

Transgender author to speak at Ole Miss

The University of Mississippi will host the ninth annual Student Gender Conference, set for Thursday through Saturday. Sponsored by the Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender Studies, a keynote presentation and two workshops will be given by Kate Bornstein, a transgender author, playwright and performance artist.

The keynote address will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Room 209 in Bryant Hall.

The workshops will be at noon Friday in Room 203 in the Isom Center and noon Saturday in Room 209 in Bryant Hall.

Pilgrimage, 5K race set in Holly Springs

The Garden Club of Holly Springs will host its first 5K race April 18, during the city’s 71st annual Pilgrimage.

The race spans about 3 miles and will begin at the Courthouse Square. The route will feature antebellum homes and historic churches and cemeteries.

Arbor Day giving away 10 redbuds

The Arbor Day Foundation is offering each new member in Mississippi 10 free Eastern redbud trees.

The 6- to 12-inch trees and planting instructions will be shipped, postpaid, between March 1 and May 31. The tree giveaway is part of the nonprofit foundation’s Trees for America campaign.
