PORT GIBSON — Horace Smith Sr. died Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Vicksburg Convalescent Home. He was 84.

A Port Gibson resident, Mr. Smith was a former nurse’s assistant at the G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery Veterans Administration Hospital. He was a member of First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Virgil Smith; his mother, Marie Jones Smith-McLaughlin; and one sister, Bessie Smith-Allen.

Survivors include his wife, Susie M.W. Smith of Port Gibson; two sons, Horace Smith Jr. and Marvin Smith, both of Memphis; two brothers, Johnny McLaughlin of New Orleans and Robert McLaughlin of Vicksburg; two sisters, Julia Smith Scott of Port Gibson and Marcia McLaughlin Pettis of Greenville; six grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Services will be at noon Saturday at First Baptist Church, 501 Farmer St., in Port Gibson with the Rev. James Dorsey officiating. Burial will follow at Hermanville Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until 6 p.m. Friday at Rollins Funeral Home in Port Gibson with family hour from 6:30 until 7:30.
