The Vicksburg Quilters Show and Sale will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The event, featuring members’ creations, will be at the Outlets at Vicksburg, next to the Reebok store.

Vicksburg artist wins art award

Vicksburg artist Lesley K. Silver received a merit award during the Meridian Museum of Art’s 36th Annual Bi-State Art Competition.

The mixed-media piece is called “Opening” and will be on display at Silver’s business, The Attic Gallery at 1101 Washington St.

Silver is a member of the Vicksburg Art Association.

Master Gardeners to host plant sale

The Hinds and Copiah Master Gardeners will host a plant sale from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at Mynelle Gardens in Jackson.

Proceeds will go to Mynelle Gardens and will help fund a horticulture scholarship at Hinds Community College in Raymond. The event will also feature a free, 30-minute vegetable gardening seminar at 10 a.m.

Alcorn schedules Earth Day events

Alcorn State University will host its eighth annual Earth Day celebration Tuesday and Wednesday at the Lorman campus.

Events are free and will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday and end at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Speakers will include U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, Port Gibson Mayor Fred Reeves and Vicksburg attorney and mayoral hopeful Paul Winfield. Activities will include a visit to the Millennium Tree, student contests, dorm room cleanups, Earth Day pledges and an Earth Day social. Zoo welcomes baby chimpanzee

The Jackson Zoo has a new chimpanzee and the 4-week-old male and his mother are ready for visitors.

MoJo and mother Missy will be available for viewing Wednesdays and Fridays.

Admission to the zoo is $7 for adults, $4 for children younger than 12 and free for those younger than 2.

Zoo hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. dailly. It is located at 2918 W. Capitol St.
