Brig. Gen. Jimmy Fowler has received the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Silver De Fleury Medal.
He was honored during a ceremony April 5 marking the end of a 50-month stint with the 416th Theater Engineer Command in Darien, Ill., outside Chicago.
An associate technical director of the Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center in Vicksburg, Fowler is also program manager for the Rapid Port Enhancement Program, which develops modeling and hardware systems that enhance theater support.
Fowler, a Union, S.C., native, was commissioned by the Army through the ROTC program in 1975 from Clemson University, where he earned master’s and doctorate degrees in chemical engineering. Prior to joining the 416th, he held positions in the 391st Engineer Battalion and the 412th Engineer Command including heavy equipment platoon leader and chief of staff for engineering and planning divisions.
His professional memberships include the Society of Military Civil Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, Chi Epsilon, Sigma Xi, the Natural Hazards Mitigation Society, Reserve Officers Association and the Army Engineer Association.
Named for Revolutionary War-era French soldier Francois de Fleury, the award first created by the Continental Congress to honor the man who fought alongside Gen. George Washington now honors individuals who have contributed significantly to Army engineering.
