4 races to be on ballots in special election Nov. 3

The justice court judgeship for Warren County’s Southern District will join three other offices to be filled on the Nov. 3 special election ballot.

Supervisors directed the Warren County Election Commission today to call an election for the post vacant due to the death of Judge Joe Crevitt on Thursday in Jackson.

Resumes will be accepted through 5 p.m. on July 16 by supervisors, who will select a person to serve on an interim basis. Northern District Judge Eddie Woods Jr. and Central District Judge Richard Bradford III had been hearing cases in Crevitt’s court during the weeks he was out due to illness. The board’s choice will preside over the Southern District’s next round of cases, set to begin July 27.

Also on the special election ballot will be races for tax collector and seats on the election commission representing District 3 and District 5.

Appointees are now serving in those posts on an interim basis. Interim Tax Collector Antonia Flaggs Jones was tapped for the post held by Pat Simrall until the 16-year incumbent’s retirement in May. Elva Smith and Lonnie Wooley were chosen by supervisors to hold the election commission seats.

Qualifying for the special election ends Sept. 4.
