Venom finishes second in division|Youth baseball

The Vicksburg Venom had another memorable weekend.

The Venom advanced to the championship game in the Blue Division of the USSSA 11-year-olds’ Global World Series on Sunday in Southaven, before losing 7-1 to the DeSoto Tigers and finishing second. The tournament included 18 teams from seven states, and teams were split into competitive divisions after a preliminary round.

The Venom advanced by beating the Arkansas Naturals on Saturday, 10-6, and the Jaguars 11-2 in the semifinals. Dale Griffith scattered four hits and two runs in five innings to get the win against the Naturals, a team from Springdale, Ark. Griffith also went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer.

Lane Hynum had a total of four hits in the two victories, and Will Pierce had two hits against the Naturals.

Pierce went 4-for-9 with a double, three RBIs, three runs scored and two stolen bases in three tournament games.
