Beulah receiving help
Published 12:00 am Saturday, September 12, 2009
The Beulah Cemetery Restoration Committee would like to show our appreciation to those who have given their time, inspirations, talents and financial assistance. We have been struggling trying to keep our historical cemetery in existence with pride and proper care.
The integrity of the Beulah Cemetery is our most significant landmark in the history of Vicksburg and Warren County among African American descendants and is an essential part of our history. It was founded by The Vicksburg Tabernacle No. 19 Independent Order of Brothers and Sisters of Love and Charity, a fraternal organization, in 1884.
A special thanks to AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps, who so generously and graciously came out and labored willingly in cleaning, raking and cutting debris. Helping to make the task easier was Barbara Parker furnishing water, gloves and other supplies.
The Links Inc., through Thelma Rush, had the Rev. Dr. Casey Fisher ask for a financial gift from the persons in attendance at their brunch on Sunday and they gave very generously.
Leo Sims is a God-given gift to the Beulah Cemetery for his upkeep and concern, and Alderman Michael Mayfield for his advice. We would be amiss without Karen Frederick, our secretary and liaison person. Thanks also to Dr. Josephine Calloway, assistant principal of Vicksburg High School, The Image Club and Corps of Engineers for their diligent sponsorship and promotion.
Thanks to Gloria Davenport and Alma Smith, vice president for their presence and encouragement. The prayers and diligence of others through the years are not forgotten.
The Beulah Cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historical Places and the committee does have 501(c)3 status. Help is encouraged physically and financially.
