Landrem, Shivers lead Tallulah past WCCA|Prep football

Tallulah Academy grounded out an old-fashioned, smashmouth win on Friday night.

The Trojans rolled up 198 rushing yards, while holding Wilkinson County Christian to 26 yards of total offense, in a 20-0 win. WCCA had minus-24 yards rushing.

Cody Landrem ran for 133 yards, and Jes Shivers threw a touchdown pass and added another on the ground for Tallulah (4-2). Shivers tossed a 58-yard touchdown pass to John Robert Fortenberry in the first quarter and ran in for an 8-yard TD in the third. Tallulah went ahead by three scores later in the third quarter when Kyle Erwin blocked a punt and Cody Petty recovered it in the end zone. Landrem ran in for the two-point conversion to make it 20-0.

Briarfield 27, Bayou 14

Jacob Hopkins ran for 244 yards and three touchdowns, and added a fourth score on an interception return to lead Briarfield past Bayou Academy.

Hopkins scored on runs of 55, 1 and 65 yards, with the last touchdown breaking a 14-14 tie in the fourth quarter. His 45-yard interception return for a touchdown later in the fourth sealed the win.

Hinds AHS 19, Amite Co. 8

Jeremy Lee caught a touchdown pass and returned an interception for another, and Hinds AHS (4-1) beat Amite County (1-1).

Lee had four tackles to go along with his 31-yard, game-sealing interception return in the fourth quarter. Hinds had taken the lead on Javonte Robinson’s 1-yard TD run earlier in the period. Hinds ran for 203 yards as a team and held Amite County to less than 100 yards of offense. Jimmy White had eight tackles and a sack to spearhead the defensive effort.

Robinson threw a 13-yard TD pass to Lee and added the short TD run. He finished with 115 rushing yards on 16 carries.

Wilkinson County 20, Port Gibson 13

Port Gibson lost despite 108 yards rushing and one score by Joshua Dotson.

The Blue Waves (3-2) fell behind 14-0 before Dotson scored with eight minutes left in the second quarter on a 40-yard run.

The Blue Waves closed to within 14-13 after Dotson hit Sidney Rollins  on a 35-yard TD pass in the third quarter. The kick failed, leaving Port Gibson down a point.

A late fourth quarter fumble was cashed in by Wilkinson County (2-3) on a 3-yard TD run with three seconds left.
