A squirrel at an electrical substation was blamed this morning for an outage that left 1,700 Entergy customers without power.

Though weather-related outages were reported in different parts of the county from the early morning hours onward, the main loss of power was at about 9:45 a.m., said Entergy spokesman Don Arnold.

“It was a squirrel,” Arnold said. “We found it dead on the substation off Iowa Boulevard.”

Power was restored to all 1,700 in about 15 minutes, Arnold said.

Meanwhile, about 300 customers in Warren County remained without power resulting from storms that passed through the city about 1 a.m. and 7 a.m., Arnold said. They were expected to be restored by this afternoon.

About .3 inches of rain fell at the city weather station at Vicksburg Municipal Airport south of the city during the 1 a.m. storm. Another .3 fell between 7 and 8 a.m.

Entergy serves about 12,000 customers in Vicksburg and another 10,000 in Warren County, Arnold said.
