Vicksburg loses nailbiter to Grenada

GRENADA — It was close, but no cigar for the Gators on Friday.

Vicksburg had a chance but fell a heartbreaking point shy in its Region 2-6A opener at Grenada.

The Chargers got a first quarter touchdown and then held on to beat the winless Gators 7-6 at Charger Stadium.

The loss drops Vicksburg to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in the region.

They meet winless Northwest Rankin (0-5, 0-1) next week at Memorial Stadium. Grenada improves to 3-2 and 1-0 in the region. Grenada got its score on a 30-yard screen pass from quarterback Channing Martin and then made its PAT kick.

Vicksburg got its lone  score in the third quarter when Cameron Cooksey scrambled 57 yards for a touchdown.

The extra point kick was missed to leave the Gators down, 7-6.
