The annual blanket campaign led by Vicksburg’s chapter of the American Red Cross will kick off Friday at the City Park Pavilion and run through Nov. 9.

“This originally started in 2004 as a result of the elderly needing assistance with their heating bills, and I thought there’s something more we can do,” said director Janice Sawyer.

Blankets will be distributed to the elderly and fire victims and nursing homes if needed.

The Woodmen of the World will sponsor the 2009 drive.

“We had money to use, and the blanket drive just fit,” said the organization’s secretary, Sandra Harrigill.

Blankets may be delivered to the chapter office at 908 Cherry St., or picked up by the Red Cross. They can also be brought to the kickoff Friday. Call 601-636-9182.
