Standing guard

Published 12:00 am Tuesday, October 20, 2009

A 7.5-inch Blakely cast-iron rifled cannon stands over the Mississippi River at Louisiana Circle as the sun sets on the western bank Monday. Only one Blakely rifled cannon was used in Vicksburg’s defense during the siege of Vicksburg in 1863. The cannon was mounted a mile north of Louisiana Circle and manned by a detachment of Company H, 1st Louisiana Heavy Artillery under the command of Lt. A.L. Slack.
