One or two disabled youth still have the opportunity to take part in the Wheelin’ Sportsmen Deer Hunt on Nov. 6-8.
The event will be held at the Bass Pro Shops in Pearl and is free for anyone age 17 or younger who has a physical or mental disability. The weekend event will allow participants the chance to meet new people, experience the outdoors and go on guided deer hunts throughout Central Mississippi.
More than 200 volunteers will be on hand to conduct other planned activities, such as paintball, fishing, and firearms safety courses.
“It’s all about providing an opportunity for disabled children to enjoy outdoor activities that others may take for granted,” organizer Joe Wood said. “They will be able to motivate and inspire one another.”
The event, now in its fourth year, has been growing each time around, said Wood. In 2008, more than 60 kids participated in the activities and more than 40 deer were harvested. This year about 70 disabled youth have already registered and there is room for a couple more, said Wood.
The National Wild Turkey Federation, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, Primos Hunting Calls and the Mississippi Braves are sponsoring the event, and will provide meals, firearms, and other outdoor necessities.
