Vicksburg residents will join a statewide effort to promote a healthy lifestyle. The second annual Let’s Go Walkin’ Down Main Street will be a week from today downtown.
If you go
Let’s Go Walkin’ Down Main Street will begin at 9 a.m. Nov. 14 at the River Stage Plaza parking lot at Washington and Crawford streets. Call 601-634-4527.
Most communities in the state have held their walks, but Kim Hopkins, director of Vicksburg Main Street, sponsor of the event, said she decided to wait because “we wanted to keep everybody motivated” midway through Shape Up Vicksburg, a local health campaign led by gym owner Linda Fondren.
“I thought it would be a good idea to team up with Linda,” Hopkins said.
In September, Fondren challenged Vicksburg residents to lose 17,000 pounds in 17 weeks.
“You get to go walking and it brings attention to how beautiful our downtown is,” Fondren said. “The goal is to make physical activity a priority.”
Participants are asked to meet at 9 a.m. at the River Stage Plaza parking lot at Washington and Crawford streets. Walkers will head toward Levee to Walnut to Cherry. One- and two-mile routes are available. Last year, 25 people participated, Hopkins said, and she’s hoping for more than 100 this year. The walk is free, and registration is not required.
