Policeman, car hit in riot at Kings Center

A Vicksburg police officer was assaulted and a patrol car was damaged during a brawl involving about 20 teens Saturday night.

After responding to a call about a fight at Kings Community Center off North Washington Street, which had been rented for a party, Officer L’Jamarro Peters was hit with a baseball bat by an unidentified juvenile, Vicksburg police Sgt. Randy Blake said.

Blake said Peters was not taken to the hospital and did not suffer serious injuries.

At about 11:20 p.m., 30 to 50 juveniles had been ejected from the center just before two officers arrived. As Peters attempted to get control of the situation, he and a police cruiser were pummeled with bricks Blake said.

The youths broke the front and rear driver side windows and dented the car – resulting in more than $500 in damages, Blake said.

About 15 juveniles were taken to police headquarters for inciting a riot and later released to their parents.

Blake said an investigation is ongoing to identify the teens responsible for damaging the patrol car and assaulting the officer.

The teens were ejected by center officials who had rented it to them.
