Jean Allen Young

OXFORD — Jean Allen Young died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford. She was 97.

Born in Indianola, Mrs. Young had lived in Oxford since 1948. She served as the Lafayette County Home Demonstration Agent and retired as an Extension Service Home Economist for Lafayette County in 1972.

Mrs. Young received her bachelor of science degree from the University of Alabama and her master of science degree from the University of Mississippi. In 1992, she was named a Distinguished Service Award recipient for community service.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Oxford and volunteered with the Oxford-Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, Oxford Garden Club, Cosmopolitan Club and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. “Bob” Young; and her parents, Dr. Lemuel and Jean Oliver Allen.

Survivors include two nephews, Clayton Allen of Oxford and Jim Pullen of Dallas; and two nieces, Patricia Allen of Dallas and Katherine Hilderbrand of Vicksburg.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John Semmes officiating. Burial will be at Oxford Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Coleman Funeral Home.
