The Vicksburg Genealogical Society will meet at 10 a.m. Monday at the Warren County-Vicksburg Public Library on Veto Street.

Lamar Roberts will present his collection of Vicksburg and Warren County postcards.

A Vicksburg native will sign copies of her book Tuesday at the Warren County-Vicksburg Public Library.

Carla Johnson Curry will also give a lecture on “Why Caged Doves Weep,” which is a story of women’s lives in prison. The event will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Curry was raised in Vicksburg and has four children. She attended Utica Junior College, Hinds and Alcorn State.

Woodcarver to speak at next VAA session

A Pearl woodcarver will be the featured speaker at the January meeting of the Vicksburg Art Association.

George Berry teaches woodcarving classes with the Mississippi Craftsmen’s Guild and John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina. He will speak at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 12.

La. Red Hats extend invite to spring event

The Louisiana Red Hat Magnolia Queens Council will host an April 23-25 event for all Red Hat Society members.

The Magnolia Glitz Celebration will feature a Fabulous 50s theme complete with food, antique cars, dancing and live music.

Cost is $150 per person by Jan. 1 and $200 per person after. The event will be at the Baton Rouge Sheraton Hotel, 102 France St.

Ornament workshop set at Monroe museum

The Masur Museum of Art in Monroe will present a children’s holiday workshop Dec. 21.

A session for ages 5 to 7 will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and one for ages 8 to 12 will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Children will create ornaments and a gift with handmade gift wrapping.

Cost is $20 for museum members and $30 for nonmembers and includes a snack.

The museum is located at 1400 S. Grand, and hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Art, lectures on tap in Birmingham

The Birmingham Museum of Art will present exhibits and art talks beginning in January.

To Make a Picture: The Photography of P.H. Polk, from the Paul R. Jones Collection, will be displayed in the African-American art gallery from Jan. 24 to May 23. The exhibit will feature Polk’s work during his time as the photographer of the Tuskegee Institute, now Tuskegee University.

A Chinese New Year art exhibition will run from Jan. 10 to Feb. 21.

In addition to exhibits, the museum will offer a free art talk by Lamia Ben Youssef Zayzafoon, a foreign languages and literatures professor at the University of Alabama, at noon Jan. 12. Also, an Art & Conversation learning event will be at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 14. Cost is $5 for museum members and $10 for nonmembers.

The museum is located at 2000 Rev. Abraham Woods Jr. Blvd., and hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Admission to the permanent collection is free.
