A Claiborne County man shot Wednesday night at his home died this morning at a Jackson hospital, and the man’s cousin was in the county jail.

Kendrick Ward, 22, was shot at the home the two shared at 2087 Valley of the Moon Road, Claiborne Sheriff Frank Davis said.

Charges against Ricky Flowers, 18, initially were aggravated assault but were upgraded to murder after Ward died at 4 a.m. at University of Mississippi Medical Center, Davis said.

Other people were in the home, Davis said this morning, but officials did not know if anyone was in the same room where the shooting occurred.

Ward had been shot once in the chest with a handgun, Davis said. He said he did not know what led to the shooting.

It was not clear if authorities retrieved the weapon.
