The Alabama monument in the Vicksburg National Military Park, completed in 1951, is the only one dedicated to women as well as the men. The central figure is a woman, and according to sculptor Stephen Thomas, she represented the women of that state, holding the spirit high, which is embodied in a Confederate battle flag.
