A view from the top

The Alabama monument in the Vicksburg National Military Park, completed in 1951, is the only one dedicated to women as well as the men. The central figure is a woman, and according to sculptor Stephen Thomas, she represented the women of that state, holding the spirit high, which is embodied in a Confederate battle flag. Every detail of the monument is realistic, and Thomas went to great lengths to make sure it was also accurate. The photo, from the Old Court House Museum collection, was taken by Bette E. Barber.
