3 proposals on table for Ceres house

Three proposals to purchase Ceres Plantation House and have it moved off the grounds of Ceres Research and Industrial Interplex will be considered by Port Commission officials.

The offers were submitted to the Warren County Chancery Clerk’s Office by a 5 p.m. deadline Tuesday.

Port commissioners want the two-story, six-bedroom house removed and a smaller pool house between the main house and two large barns demolished so that the space behind the trees at the Flowers exit off Interstate 20 can support a commercial business.

The structures came with the grant-funded purchase of the farmland near the Big Black River in east Warren County in 1986.

The house has had many uses since its construction in the 1830s. Recently, the property was operated as a plant nursery for nine years until 2007 when a dispute over rent and maintenance forced it to close.

A take-back clause in the county’s lease with the past two tenants stipulated residents vacate the premises if an industrial prospect expressed interest in locating on the site.

The contents of the proposals were not disclosed, but may be discussed at the next meeting of the port commission.

The five members of that panel are appointed by supervisors to manage county-developed industrial sites.
