Restaurants helped

NJROTC at Warren Central High School would like to thank the generous Vicksburg restaurants that donated “dinner for two” for a raffle done on Wednesday. They were Jacques’ Cafe In the Park, El Sombrero Mexican Restaurant, DiamondJacks Casino Buffet, Billy’s Italian Restaurant and Sun Koon Restaurant.

Good people, good city

I was involved in an accident on Confederate Avenue. It was raining and I was headed back to work after going home at lunch, which I do nearly every day.

Every day that I drive that stretch of road, I see people speeding and crossing the center line, rain or no rain. The young man who hit me was speeding and lost control at the curve at Marcus and Confederate. Either one of us could have been killed.

I want to thank the Vicksburg Police Department for its assistance and the Vicksburg Fire Department paramedics who responded. I was transported to River Region where I was given great care, both in the ambulance and in the ER.

The thing I really want to point out is that I am not from here originally, but I got a true sense of how a community is supposed to act. The young man who hit me admitted fault. My boss and my sister-in-law left work and stayed with me the rest of the day. My neighbor, who is also my insurance agent, was at the scene of the accident within moments of my calling her. My in-laws brought me lunch and dinner.

I have wanted to live here for years, and we were finally able move here last summer. I will be forever grateful for this wonderful community of which I am now a part. Thank you.

Parents, teachers team

On Jan. 23, Vicksburg Intermediate School had a parent workshop called “Munchin‘ the MCT2.” It was a two-hour workshop that consisted of teaching parents how to read test scores, look at their child’s test scores, strategies to improve test scores and the importance of test scores personally and for the school.

I had 12 dedicated faculty members — Ashley Smith, Otha Murphy, Deidra Williams, Latoya Minor, Regina O’Leary, Virginia Smith, Tasha Thompson, Cassandra Patterson, Dionne Smith, Chandrea Butler, Carol Cameron (test coordinator), Mary June Cooksey (the lead teacher) and Janice Koestler (assistant principal), volunteer their time and expertise, give up their Saturday morning and spend it with me in attempt to make a difference in this year’s test scores for our school. I also had the technical support of third-grade teacher Rebecca Flanagan.

As amazing as their unselfishness was the appreciation and concern from over 130 parents. The parents were here, asking questions, taking notes and being accountable. It is moments like this that make it all worthwhile, and I want to personally thank each parent/guardian who participated. Vicksburg Intermediate School was voted the best school for the 2009-10 school term in The Vicksburg Post because we have teachers and parents who care and are committed to making a difference in the lives of the students.

If you missed this workshop, please attend the one we will have in April. Only by working together will we be successful.
