The Vicksburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will host its 20th annual International Tasting Fiesta at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Main Street. Admission is $5 per person. Call 601-636-1122.
What began as Taste of Africa grew about eight years ago to an event called International Tasting Fiesta.
“We decided we have neighbors, so we expanded,” said Nellie Beard, chapter president.
Guests will have the opportunity to sample foods and eye clothing and displays of cultures from across the globe at the event, set for 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
“We display about six cultures,” Beard said. “We have representation from the different cultures with song and dance. People will get to taste food from each country.”
Sorority members will cook some of the food, Beard said, but, “we get (other) people to cook (some of) the food so it (will) be authentic.”
Featured cultures will be Native American, Mexican, Chinese, Lebanese, African and African-American. Dishes to look forward to include hot tamales, cabbage and corn pudding, and red beans and rice.
In addition to the food, the event will feature a display of Delta Sigma Theta memorabilia, and jewelry and clothing vendors will be on hand.
Beard is expecting a crowd of at least 400, up from last year’s 200. Admission is $5 per person.
