Spring gardening events as plentiful as spring weeds

Lots of gardening events are scheduled throughout the spring.

March 1: Vegetable Gardening with Sonny Hale; March 8: Mushroom Cultivation by Jim Pennington; March 15: Hardy, Tough Plants with guest speaker Jeff Richardson, landscape director for the City of Vicksburg; March 22: Deer Tolerant Gardening with Ann Sherard and Jim Brannon; March 29: Escaped Ornamentals-Weed Alert by Virginia DuBowy, Vicksburg National Military Park. • First Tuesday Gardening Series — Warren County Extension Office by Horticulturist Donna Beliech. Each session begins at noon. March 2: 2010 Gardening Trends: rain gardens, square-foot gardening, going green efforts, adult playgrounds and kaleidoscopes of color; April 6: Kitchen Gardens Can Work for Any Size Landscape; May 4: Tabletop Gardening for Indoor Locations. Free and open to the public.
• Second Everything Garden Expo — 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, March 6 and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, March 7; Mississippi Horse Park at MSU, Starkville (716 E. Poorhouse Road or .8 mile east from Poorhouse and South Montgomery Street); presented by the Starkville Area Arts Council and sponsored by MSU, the MSU Extension Service, Mississippi Agricultural & Forestry Experiment Station, the Greater Starkville Development Partnership and Starkville School District’s Family Centered Programs. Vendors, plants for sale, children’s activities and talks by gardening experts such as Fielder Rushing, Nellie Neal, Dr. Rick Snyder, Lynette McDougald and Dr. Leila Kelly. Learn about growing tomatoes and other vegetables in your backyard, ornamentals, cone flowers, landscape design and invasive weed control. Cost: $5, children younger than 6 are free.
• Jackson Garden and Patio Show — 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, March 19; 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, March 20; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, March 21; Mississippi Trade Mart, Jackson. Sponsor: Mississippi Nursery & Landscape Association Inc. Educational presentations, plants, retail vendors, children’s activities. Guest speakers: Linda Askey, Southern Living Magazine; Erica Glasener, Host of HGTV’s “A Gardener’s Diary”; Jo Kellum, author of “Southern Sun”; Catherine Strange, author of “Fearless Entertaining Flowers”; and Walt Grayson WLBT host of Look Around Mississippi and Mississippi ETV’s Mississippi Roads. • Festival of Flowers — Thursday-Sunday, March 25-28; Providence Hospital campus, 6801 Airport Blvd., Mobile, Ala.; hours: 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. Rated as one of the Southeast’s Top 20 Events, the festival includes eight acres of floral exhibits, life-sized landscaped gardens, designer tablescapes, demonstrations and educational speakers.
