George Edna Sherman

George Edna Sherman died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, at Promise Specialty Hospital. She was 91.
Born in Clyde, Miss., on Oct. 26, 1918, George Edna was the daughter of the late George Samuel Rockwell and Bessie Belle Simmons Rockwell. She was a graduate of Hattiesburg High School in the class of 1935. She attended cosmetology school in 1936 and was employed in various salons. She was a secretary for The Merchants Company, Vicksburg branch, for three years and was later employed at Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg for 13 years.
George Edna married Joseph E. Watson in June of 1940, and he died in 1955. She married Carleton W. Sherman in 1966, and he died in 1996.
She was an active member of the Methodist church since early childhood. At Crawford Street United Methodist Church, she was a member of the seniors Sunday school class, Wesleyan Service Guild, United Methodist Women, XYZ’s Group and the Shepherding Ministry. She was a member of the Redwood Homemakers Club, the Beta chapter of PAK Sorority and the Floral Garden Club.
She is survived by one daughter, Joyce Watson Waites; one granddaughter, Pamela Sewak and her husband, Tom; one grandson, Douglas Waites; one great-grandson, John Joseph Sewak; one brother, William E. Rockwell; and a stepson, Carleton K. Sherman.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Rodney F. Rockwell; and three sisters, Julia Guy, Vesta Petro and Marion Tennant.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Crawford Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Cary Stockett, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Riles Funeral Home.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home and Monday from 10 until the hour of the service at the church.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Fleming, Leo Boolos, Hugh Green, Louis Decell, Clyde Sartor, George Hunt Jr., Carl Terry Hudson and Bill Flathau.
