Annieglass owner Annie Morhauser will choose five winners. Entry is free. For more information, call Sassafras at 601-638-3744 or visit www.annieglass.com.

California artist Annie Morhauser will host the Annieglass Best Recipe Contest Thursday afternoon at Sassafras, a shop on Washington Street. Morhauser owns Annieglass, a Watsonville, Calif.-based company that specializes in handcrafted glass tableware. Morhauser will be in Vicksburg as part of a four-stop tour in Mississippi.

“We’re inviting people to bring their recipes, prepared on Annieglass or a picture of your recipe on Annieglass,” store owner Nancy Bullard said. “While (Morhauser) is here, she will select five winners,” who will receive a piece from the Annieglass collection. They will also be featured on the company’s Web site, www.annieglass.com.

Sassafras carries more than 150 Annieglass pieces.

“It’s very elegant,” Bullard said. “It can be sophisticated without being formal.”

Each Annieglass piece is handcrafted through a technique called slumping, during which a sheet of flat glass is melted over a mold at very high temperatures in a fiery kiln. Precious metals are then hand-painted onto the glass, making it chip-resistant and dishwasher safe. A total of 50,000 Annieglass pieces are produced annually. The company was founded in 1983.

Morhauser’s Annieglass pieces have been included in the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, N.Y., the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow, Scotland.

While on her Mississippi tour, Morhauser will visit shops in Philadelphia, Meridian and Madison.
