A donation account has been opened at Regions Bank for a Warren County toddler who was taken to the hospital after being attacked by the family dog Wednesday night.
Jack Gaines, 2-year-old son of Robin Causey and Brad Gaines, remains at University Medical Center, where he was in fair condition this morning, hospital spokesman Peggy Wagner said. The child underwent surgery Thursday afternoon to repair gashes to the left side of his head and face, said an aunt, Sherrie Johnson, who was waiting at the hospital with family members. She said the doctor told the family Jack will need to have more surgery to repair a muscle in his left eyelid so he can open his eye.
“He’s doing OK,” she said. “He’s a happy, precious little boy. It could have been a whole lot worse. It’s just senseless.”
The toddler was mauled by the family’s 5-year-old, 70-pound cur dog while he was playing with family members in the yard of their home at 733 Stenson Road. His grandfather, Ira Erwin, pulled the dog off Jack, but he had already received lacerations from the attack. The cause of the attack is still not known.
The dog remains at the Vicksburg-Warren Humane Society, and the family plans to request to have the animal be euthanized, Jacks’ great-aunt Cathy Shelton said.
Anyone who would like to donate to help with Jack’s medical bills, can visit any Regions Bank and deposit a donation into an account called Jack Gaines and Robin Causey.
