Grand jurors reviewed evidence against, but found no reason to charge, a Vicksburg woman believed to have been involved in the death of a pedestrian on U.S. 80 in 2009.
Stephanie Jones, age and address unavailable, was not arrested or charged with a crime after the Aug. 30 hit-and-run that killed John Lee Noble, 4798 U.S. 61 South, who was 33.
Noble’s body was found by the side of the road around 5:30 a.m. and Coroner Doug Huskey said Noble appeared to have died “a couple of hours” earlier.
Jones, who contacted the sheriff’s office later that day, told authorities she knew she hit something, and stopped her car to look. Finding nothing, she said, she assumed it had been a deer that had run off, and went on her way.
She turned over her car to the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol, which was in charge of the investigation.
District Attorney Ricky Smith presented evidence in the case to the grand jury, meeting this week in the Warren County Courthouse, but they declined to indict Jones.
Grand jurors also no-billed — meaning they found no or insufficient evidence to take individuals to trial — six other cases.
The 18 jurors were sworn in Monday by presiding Judge Isadore Patrick. During the week they reviewed 90 cases against 107 individuals, issuing indictments in 83 of the cases.
Thursday, the first group of 15 defendants indicted was arraigned, or formally notified in Circuit Court of the charges against them and assigned trial dates.
Among them were Barry Gene Stocks, 56, 6075 Oak Ridge Road, who is charged with sexual battery of a child under age 14. Stocks has been in the Warren County Jail since his Jan. 7 arrest. The complaint was filed by a family member of the child. Patrick set a Dec. 6 trial date for Stocks.
Also indicted and arraigned was Leon D. Bryant, 33, 4920 Halls Ferry Road, accused of assaulting a deputy at the jail March 17 and then escaping. Bryant was captured several days later in Chicago and returned to Warren County, where he has been held at the jail. His trial was set for Nov. 15.
