City man will face trial in teen’s death

The Vicksburg man accused in the New Year’s Eve stabbing of a 16-year-old has been arraigned in Warren County Circuit Court and will face trial Nov. 29, District Attorney Ricky Smith said Friday.

Deaunte Earl Lewis, 23, 713 Johnson St., was one of 45 defendants named in a second wave of grand jury indictments released Friday. The panel was convened Monday by Circuit Court Judge Isadore Patrick.

Lewis was arrested by Vicksburg police just minutes after Terry Robinson’s death around 11:57 p.m. in the Waltersville Estates development off North Washington Street. Witnesses said at the time that the two had argued, Robinson had left the dwelling by one door and Lewis had followed by another and attacked him with a knife from the kitchen.

Lewis was on an early-release program from previous convictions of larceny of a motor vehicle and aggravated assault of a police officer, court documents show, but has been in the Warren County Jail since his arrest.

Also indicted and arraigned — formally notified of charges against him — was Leroy Evans, 33, 1762 Mississippi 27.

Grand jurors indicted Evans on five counts of arson from the Jan. 25. blazes that destroyed a small store and four homes on First North and Jackson streets. While Evans was a suspect in fires dating to 2007 and before, the grand jury reviewed evidence from the January charges only, Smith said, “because of the thorough investigation conducted by local and state fire investigators.”

Evans’ trial date was set for Dec. 6. He is out on bond.

The 18-member grand jury was selected and sworn in Monday and concluded its service Thursday.

Jurors reviewed evidence against 107 individuals in 90 cases, issuing indictments in 83 of the cases and no-bills, meaning there was not enough evidence to bring to trial, in seven.

Indictments are not made public until defendants have been arraigned in court or waived the procedure.

In addition to reviewing case evidence, the grand jury tours the jail and other public buildings, meets with county law enforcement and justice officials and issues the Grand Jury Report.

The next term of the Warren County Grand Jury will begin July 26.
