Clinton man charged in local robbery, assault with car

A Clinton man was in the Warren County Jail today charged with the robbery and aggravated assault of a Vicksburg man.

Matthew Shelby, 25, 103 Sonya’s Cove, is accused of robbing and running over Richard Craft, 41, at Kangaroo convenience store, 3400 Halls Ferry Road, on April 27, Vicksburg police Sgt. Sandra Williams said.

Craft, 109 Bering St., was injured and taken to River Region Medical Center after he was hit with a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am that drove away after the driver took Craft’s Motorola cell phone.

Last Friday, Shelby was arrested in Slidell, La., on a Vicksburg warrant for the charges, Williams said.

He was extradited and booked at Vicksburg police headquarters at 5:15 p.m. Thursday and is being held on a $50,000 bond, she said.

Hospital spokesman Allen Karel said today the victim has been released.
