Woman convicted on lesser charge in family fight

A Warren County woman was convicted by a jury Friday of two counts of simple assault, misdemeanors each punishable by up to six months in jail.

Donna Bailey, 52, 715 Roy Young Road, was tried for felony aggravated assault and attempted aggravated assault, charges filed after an Oct. 11, 2008, fight with her sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Steven Carlisle.

Steven Carlisle was treated for a gunshot wound following the fight.

Judge Isadore Patrick instructed jurors they could find Bailey guilty of the lesser offense if they believed her actions were negligent rather than intentional.

The trial began Monday with jury selection. Testimony was heard Wednesday and Thursday, and closing arguments, instructions and deliberations took place Friday. Sentencing is set for July 23.

Also in Warren County Circuit Court for the week ending Friday:

• Kevin D. Buck, 24, 20 Waterwell Road, was found guilty of violating probation and sentenced by Judge M. James Chaney to one year in prison followed by nine years of probation. Buck was arrested Aug. 8, 2001, and Dec. 31, 2001, for armed robberies.

• James M. Hart, 36, 201 Berryman Road, Apt. A-6, pleaded guilty to possession of precursor substances and possession of a controlled substance and was sentenced by Chaney to five years in prison followed by five years of probation, plus $3,622.50 in fines and costs. Hart was arrested March 5, 2009.

• John Roger Johnson, 18, 375 Dudley Road, pleaded guilty to burglary of a vehicle and possession of a stolen weapon and was sentenced by Chaney to five years of probation, plus $2,745 in restitution, fines and costs. Johnson was arrested Dec. 27, 2008.

• Grant Jones, 21, 2224 Oak St., was found guilty of violating probation and sentenced by Chaney to two years in prison to include drug and alcohol treatment and followed by three years of probation. Jones was arrested July 1 for possession of a stolen firearm and grand larceny.

• Freddie Rader, 43, 103 Cross Drive, was found guilty of violating probation and sentenced by Patrick to three years in prison. Rader was arrested Dec. 2, 2003, for sale of cocaine.

• Michael A. Robinson, 23, 1508 Ethel St., Apt. A, was found guilty of violating probation and sentenced by Chaney to three years in prison to include drug and alcohol treatment. Robinson was arrested Aug. 29, 2007, for sale of cocaine.

• Larry Turner, 49, 820 Harris St., after pleading guilty May 20 to sale of cocaine, was sentenced by Patrick to four years in prison followed by five years of probation, plus $3,322.50 in fines and costs. Turner was arrested Aug. 28, 2008.

• Jessica Ellen White, 19, 1239 Boy Scout Road, was found guilty of violating probation and sentenced by Patrick to the Mississippi Department of Corrections Extended Alcohol and Drug Treatment Program followed by two years in the Intensive Supervision Program (house arrest), then by three years of probation. White was arrested Sept. 15, 2008, for three counts of auto burglary.
