ITTA BENA — Due to unsafe conditions at Rice-Totten Stadium, Mississippi Valley State has moved three of its four home games for the 2010 season to Greenville.

The Delta Devils’ Sept. 18 game against Alcorn State has been moved to Chicago’s Soldier Field. The Oct. 2 game against Prairie View A&M, the Oct. 23 game against Grambling State and the Nov. 13 game with Alabama A&M will be played at Greenville-Weston High School’s stadium.

Mississippi Valley State officials are reviewing a recent engineer’s inspection of structural problems on Rice-Totten Stadium’s east side.

“Renovation is expected to begin late this fall. Use of the stadium has been suspended until corrective work has been completed,” said Tommy Verdell, Valley’s manager of facilities. “Ensuring the safety of our students, faculty, staff and general public at MVSU is our highest priority.”

According to a report obtained by the Greenwood Commonwealth in February by an open records request, Burle Engineers P.A. of Greenville said most of the east side stands at Rice-Totten Stadium are unsafe and should be replaced. The report estimates the replacement cost at $1.75 million.

The game in Chicago will be Valley’s third in five years, including a 10-3 victory over Alabama State in 2009.
