Chicken truck-SUV wreck ties up 27 for hours

About 50,000 pounds of chicken breasts were dumped on Mississippi 27 early Saturday when an 18-wheeler turned over after hitting a sports utility vehicle that turned in front of it off Gibson Road, Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said.

The wreck was investigated by the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol, Pace said, but troopers did not return calls.

Pace said apparently two vehicles drove onto Mississippi 27 from Gibson Road into the path of an 18-wheeler. The truck missed the first vehicle and collided with the second, a Saturn SUV, causing it to collide with another SUV, Pace said.

He said deputies sent to the scene at about 2:34 a.m. found the truck, the chicken, and both SUVs, one abandoned.

A person claiming to be the driver of the Saturn, who later was driven to River Region Medical Center for treatment, apparently jumped into another car in her caravan before seeking treatment.

Both lanes of the highway were blocked to north and south traffic for some time and one remained blocked more than three hours later, Pace said.

Details about the driver of the 18-wheeler were not available.
