A solid selection

The Vicksburg-Warren County Chamber of Commerce executive committee had often discussed just how vital schools are to the business development of our community. When we found out about the resignation of Dr. James Price and subsequent search for his replacement our executive director, Christi Kilroy, and president, Brother Blackburn, took the initiative to meet with the school board. Not only were they well received, the board asked that we meet with the candidates ourselves and provide input from the business community.

In the past I have witnessed school administrators from other systems who ignored public opinion and even the recommendations of their advisory board. In contrast our public school community enjoys a very open process.

First off, the search group and those presenting candidates did an outstanding job. It was our opinion that any one of the four candidates interviewed would probably have done a very fine job. Dr. Elizabeth Swinford, in particular, showed a great deal of energy and drive. In her opening remarks she recognized that we do have some challenges ahead of us, but she also indicated that she had the experience and was willing to tackle the problems we face.

We should all be proud of our new superintendent, the process used to select her and the dedicated people who will be introducing her into our community. Going forward, we need to apply that same dedication to ensure that she and our schools will be a success.
