A 24-year-old Warren County woman died this morning in what appeared to be a one-vehicle wreck on U.S. 61 South just south of Rifle Range Road.

Brelyn Shirnita Gross, 275 Rancho Road, was pronounced dead at 8:23 a.m. by Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey, who ordered an autopsy to be performed at the Mississippi Crime Lab in Jackson. Huskey said he could not determine a cause of death. Other details also remained sparse this morning.

Officials responded to the scene just before 8 a.m., where they discovered a silver 2003 Cadillac DeVille in the highway median just north of the bridge over Hatcher Bayou. The car had crashed through a guardrail on the east side of the southbound lanes, but appeared to have first careened off a guard rail on the west side of the lanes before crossing both lanes.

Vicksburg Police Traffic Investigator Chris Tankesly said the probe into the cause of the wreck was ongoing and he could provide no details. He and a Warren County deputy were reconstructing the wreck at midmorning.

It appeared Gross, described as a friendly and outgoing person, had no passengers in the vehicle. While no other vehicles appeared to be directly involved in the wreck, at least one witness told police another vehicle, an 18-wheeler, was in the vicinity of Gross’ at the time of the wreck, which coincided with school traffic in the Dana Road area.

Bubba Judge, Gross’ nephew, said his aunt worked in day care, and her mother, Brenda, is a teacher at Dana Road Elementary School. She is also survived by her father and a brother, Judge said.

Traffic in both the north and southbound lanes of U.S. 61 was reduced to one-lane for about an hour and a half following the wreck.
