Schools in poor shape

Our schools are in pitiful condition. According to recent information, they are within about 2 points of being taken over by the state. Also, records indicate Warren County spends almost twice the state average per child on education. This tells two things. One is spending more is not the answer. Two, our last superintendent doesn’t have a lot to brag about. Things surely did not get better. The same goes for the members of the school board. We paid for something we didn’t get and can only look for more of the same this year.

I have one thing to say about the new superintendent. I can only hope discipline is one of her main goals. That would be something not tried lately. Information on Warren County says it costs more to bus the kids here than to educate them. One can understand this when we see four buses leave Eagle Lake every day and none have more than three or four kids.

Had the thing about vouchers been passed as written, parents would have an alternative to putting their kids in schools and worrying about their safety. Maybe they would not come home telling about all the vulgar talk they have to listen to all day and never, even once having anyone in authority calling those doing it down. Something is wrong when kids in elementary schools talk the way many of them do now. It’s probably all they ever hear at home.
