Day, Jones have both contributed to city

David Day, owner of the Klondyke and host of the former 1490 AM “Live from the Klondyke” radio show, and Mark Jones, owner of the radio station, have much in common.
They are both Vicksburg residents by choice. Both moved here in recent years because they believed this community to be a small town with great opportunities and great potential.
Jones energized the airwaves and the community, most notably by starting the annual Christmas caroling contests. The contests have become an instant tradition for hundreds of local participants.
Jones also tapped Day for a local call-in show, a format that previously had been rare.
Last week it was learned the plug had been pulled on Day by Jones who said, “I just didn’t want the host ranting about his opinion.”
Jones is right. Rants are not entertaining and are usually not informative.
But there’s another consideration. At least when we’ve heard the show, rants have been rare. Like Jones, Day, also an appointee to the Vicksburg Convention and Visitors Bureau, has been a booster of Vicksburg. His efforts and leadership in community-building have been calm and steady. Anyone who listened to his show would learn in just a few minutes that he believes Vicksburg is a quality place to live and raise a family. He’s solidly upbeat — but he leads and allows discussions of where he and callers believe improvements are needed, too. It’s very healthy in any community to avoid rants, but not to ignore areas where improvement is needed.
We don’t see this as an issue of censorship. We hope it is a misunderstanding between two like-minded businessmen and that Day’s gentle good humor will return to the air.
Both want what’s best for Vicksburg. That provides a lot of common ground.
