Two Vicksburg men are jailed in the slaying of a man in Jackson Friday night, and a third suspect was being sought and believed to be in Vicksburg, officials said.
Jermaine Johnson, 32, 115 Oakland Drive, was already in the Warren County Jail Wednesday on an unrelated charge when Vicksburg police were notified he would be charged by Jackson police in the killing of Derrick Spires, 32. On the same day, the U.S. Marshals Service picked up Corey Lovelle Anderson, 24, 3655 Wisconsin Ave., in Fayette, Jackson police officer Colendula Green said.
The men are accused of shooting Spires around 11:30 p.m. Friday in the 1000 block of Atley Drive in north Jackson, Green said.
She said Spires was shot in the upper torso after he attempted to take a gun away from one of the two men being charged. Spires was taken to University Medical Center, where he died Saturday. Police gave no details of the argument that led to the shooting.
Vicksburg police Lt. Bobby Stewart said Johnson had been jailed Tuesday on a charge of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, having been found guilty in 2008 of drug possession. His bond on the weapons charge was set at $30,000, but Johnson was expected to be turned over to Jackson police, Stewart said.
Anderson was held without bond at the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond.
Green and Stewart declined to name the third suspect, but Stewart, the chief of the Vicksburg department’s investigations team, said he believes he is in the city.
