Grab a jacket and head out to fall gardening events

It’s nearly fall, so mark your calendars for the bevy of gardening events scheduled across the state.
• Tuesday — First Tuesday Gardening Series at the Warren County Extension Service Office, 1100-C Grove St.
From noon to 1 p.m., Donna Beliech, a Mississippi State Extension Service horticulturist, will talk about succulents. Admission is free, and participants are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch.
• Friday-Sept. 12 — The 11th Annual Hummingbird Migration Celebration at the Strawberry Plains Audubon Center, 285 Plains Road, Holly Springs.
Activities from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. will include bird-banding; wagon rides and nature walks through the 2,600-acre Nature Sanctuary; a native plant sale; live animal shows; a children’s nature tent; vendors and crafts; and experts on conservation, ecology and sustainability. The featured speaker will be Doug Tallamy, author of “Bringing Nature Home: How You Can Sustain Wildlife with Native Plants.” Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for children ages 5 to 12. • Oct. 1-3 — Antiques at the Gardens at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 1 and 2 and from 1 to 5 p.m. Oct. 3, see beautiful gardens plus antiques and collectibles for sale. Admission is $10. The Red Diamond Lecture Series on Oct. 1 will feature floral and event designer DeJuan Stroud at 10:30 a.m. and interior designer Miles Redd at 1 p.m. The fee is $25 per lecture.
• Oct. 5 — First Tuesday Gardening Series at the Warren County Extension Service Office, 1100-C Grove St.

• Oct. 8-10 — Midsouth Native Plant Conference at Dixon Gallery and Gardens, 4339 Park Ave., Memphis.
From 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 8, take a tour of the gallery and enjoy refreshments and a wildflower presentation by Felder Rushing. At 8 a.m. Oct. 9 will be presentations by C. Colston Burrell, Ann English, Rick Lewandowski and Don Shadow. A guided field trip through Overton Park’s Old Forest and private gardens will be offered Oct. 10. Cost is $125. For a brochure, visit www.dixon.org • Oct. 11 — Bon Voyage, a State Advanced Standard Flower Show at the Mississippi School of the Arts, 355 West Monticello St, Brookhaven.
The event, sponsored by the Garden Clubs of Mississippi, runs from 1 to 5 p.m., and admission is free.
• Oct. 13 — Organic Gardening for the Deep South, a presentation at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 230 W. Monticello St., Brookhaven.

• Oct. 15–16 — Fall Flower and Garden Fest at the Truck Crops Experiment Station in Crystal Springs.
Featured from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. will be speakers, educational exhibits, display and test gardens and food and plant vendors. The Let’s Go Mississippi one-mile fun walk will be at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 15. Admission is free.
• Oct. 15-16 — The Southern Garden Symposium at St. Francisville, La.
Featured speakers will be Trish Aleshire, David Creech, Jeff Kuehny, Ron Morgan, Mark Plotkin, William Scale and Rick Webb. Also offered will be garden tours and lunches at Afton Villa and Hemingbough. Registration is required. Visit www.SouthernGardenSymposium.org or call 225-635-3738
• Oct. 20 — The 55th Edward C. Martin Jr. Landscape Design Symposium at the Bost Extension Auditorium on the campus of Mississippi State University in Starkville.
The 8:30 a.m. to noon event is sponsored by the Department of Landscape Architecture, MSU and the Garden Clubs of Mississippi. Speakers will include Bob Brzuszek, associate professor of landscape architecture at MSU; James Cothran, an author with 30 years in urban and regional planning, landscape architecture, site planning and historic preservation; and Michael Seymour, assistant professor of landscape architecture at MSU. at All Saints Episcopal Church in Tupelo.

• Nov. 20-21 — The Mississippi Gulf Coast Camellia Show at the Lyman-Orange Grove Community Center, 13472 U.S. 49, Gulfport.
