Carolyn Payne Grimes Harrell

Carolyn Payne Grimes Harrell, a longtime resident of Vicksburg and a former resident of Pine Bluff, Ark., died Friday, Sept. 3, 2010, following a courageous battle with her health. She was 69.

Mrs. Harrell was a retired licensed practical nurse and homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Calvin Payne and Cecilia Magnini Payne; two brothers, Billy Calvin Payne and David Joe Payne Sr.; sister, Virgie Lee Payne Barranco; her former husband, Jeffrey Grimes Sr.; and her newborn twin sons (babies Grimes).

She is survived by her son, Jeffrey Grimes Jr. (Elizabeth) of Florence; two daughters, Debra Grimes Lee (Stanley) and Billie Grimes Latham (Hays), both of Vicksburg; and her former son-in-law, Johnny Means of Vicksburg.

Mrs. Harrell also is survived by her grandsons, Brett and Evan Grimes of Florence; and granddaughters, Julia Lee and Olivia Lee of Vicksburg, Stacey Means Sumrall (Russell) of Vicksburg, Kristen Means Gayle (Bo) of Vicksburg, Gayle Latham Goudelock (Robbie) of Atlanta, Ga., and Laura Latham Montgomery (Will) of Gluckstadt, Miss.

She also is survived by her great-grandchildren, Kaylan Means, Austin Sumrall and McKinley Gayle, all of Vicksburg, and Patch Goudelock of Atlanta.

In addition, Mrs. Harrell is survived by her sister, Betty Payne Puinno, of Sandston, Va.; sister-in-law, Daisy Paine of Pine Bluff; and brother-in-law, Joseph S. Barranco of Tulsa, Okla.; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Mrs. Harrell’s life will be celebrated Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. by the Rev. Billie Abraham during a Holy Eucharist Service at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 5930 Warriors Trail. Visitation will be Monday from 5 until 7 p.m. at Riles Funeral Home and Tuesday at the church from 3 p.m. until the service.

Immediately following the service, according to her wishes, Mrs. Harrell will be buried next to the father of her five children, Jeff Grimes Sr., at Green Acres Memorial Park. Following the services, the family will receive guests at the home of Billie and Hays Latham, 111 Maison Rue.

Pallbearers will be Brett Grimes, Evan Grimes, Bo Gayle, Russell Sumrall, Johnny Means and Shane Gray.

Memorials may be made to St. Alban’s Episcopal Church
