Phillip N. Corley

Phillip N. Corley, 63, died Sept. 18, 2010, at his residence after a long battle with cancer.

Mr. Corley was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He graduated from Augusta College and moved to Vicksburg in 1971 as program director with the YMCA. He helped open the Raworth YMCA and was camp director at Warner-Tully for four years. He started his 31-year federal career in 1975 with the Social Security Administration and, five years later, transferred to the Vicksburg District Corps of Engineers. After retiring in 2005, he landed his dream part-time job at the Tallulah Country Club.

He was an avid golfer who also loved to cook and grill. He coached YMCA football and basketball, Culkin League baseball, was a Boy Scout leader and Sunday school teacher for a number of years. He was a past president of the St. Aloysius “A” Club and was instrumental in initiating the “A” Club Golf Tournament.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles S. and Dorothy Corley of Augusta, Ga.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn N. Corley of Vicksburg; a son, Stephen (LeAnn) Corley of The Woodlands, Texas; a daughter, Amanda (Paul) Pierce of Seminary, Miss.; five grandchildren, Cameron and Peyton Corley of The Woodlands and Kalie, Kelsie and Easton Pierce of Seminary; one brother, Don (Cynthia) Corley of Statesboro, Ga.; and two nieces and three nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, at Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Brown, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be at Green Acres Memorial Park. Visitation will be held tonight from 5 until 7 and from 10 a.m. until the service.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Beard, Thomas Lawhun, Jeffrey Corley, J.T. Fulton, Bob Jensen, David Garrick, Jim Hearn, Johnny Nassour, Sam Corson and Harold Blue.

Honorary pallbearers will be Page Greenwood, Patrick Beard, Julian Sheldon, Mike Cordes, Dixon Wilson, Dr. Lee Giffin, Judge M. James Chaney, Sandra Smith and the staff of the Tallulah Country Club.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Vicksburg or a charity of your choice.
