Improved line play helps PCA stop skid

Porters Chapel quarterback Jonah Masterson had a big smile on his face after Friday’s 31-24 victory over Prentiss Christian.

Was it the fact the Eagles (3-3) snapped a three-game losing streak? That probably had something to do with it.

But the main reason was the nearly spotless uniform he wore after the game. His offensive line made sure the freshman quarterback had plenty of time to throw and he wasn’t sacked or hurried for the first time this season. With the exception of two botched shotgun snaps, it was a flawless performance.

“That was a big thing for us,” PCA coach John Weaver said. “I told these guys in the end zone during pregame warmups ‘do not let him get touched.’”

The offensive line was listening. Their work was evidenced by their freshman quarterback’s statline.

Masterson completed 13 of 22 passes for 230 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, his best performance of the season. Most of it had to with the improved pass protection.

Most of those passes went to Chris Marshall, who was held in check against Trinity the week before. Marshall had 10 catches for a school-record 203 yards and three touchdowns.

The line also did yeoman work opening holes in the running game. Masterson gained 30 yards on a designed quarterback run and Jake Boyd rushed for a game-changing 80-yard touchdown, keyed by a nice kickout block by left tackle Caze Brewer.

The offensive line had only one starter, Brewer, returning from last year and it has been a work in progress so far. It takes time for the five guys to gel and work as a unit. Weaver said he’s starting to see it.

With two must-win district games remaining on the schedule starting Friday with Russell Christian, it couldn’t have happened at a better time.

“That was the best game they’ve played since the Tallulah game,” Weaver said of his offensive line. “They’ll get better every game. They don’t get mentioned in the paper much, but you know when they mess up. You know when they do their jobs and they definitely did their job Friday night. They also opened up holes for our runners.”
