A Vicksburg man was killed and two of his “friends from birth” were injured Saturday night in a wreck in rural Jefferson County.

David Alan Smith, 23, 135 Red Oak Drive, was killed after the pickup he was driving hit gravel and spun out of control before hitting an oak tree near McBride, Miss., Jefferson County Coroner Robert Rollins said this morning.

In the car with Smith were two men, Spencer Pell and David Michael Hobkirk, both of Vicksburg, said Smith’s stepfather, Terry McCraine of Vicksburg.

“They had all been friends since they were born,” McCraine said.

Hobkirk was taken to University Medical Center in Jackson, where he was in good condition this morning, a hospital spokesman said. Pell’s condition could not be confirmed this morning.

McCraine said the three were northbound and believed to be on their way home when the accident occurred soon after midnight. They had been in Jefferson County since Friday night and had spent Saturday preparing food plots for deer hunting at Blue Hill.

Smith, who had been a contract employee at LeTourneau Technologies for about two months, was a graduate of Youth Challenge at Camp Shelby, where he was enrolled after attending Vicksburg schools.

In addition to his mother, Christy Lynn McCraine of Vicksburg, and stepfather, Smith is survived by his father and stepmother, Tom and Ann Smith of Vicksburg, two sisters and a brother.

Glenwood Funeral Home of Vicksburg was in charge of arrangements.
