The former home of El Sombrero Mexican restaurant at Dixie Plaza on South Frontage Road has been added to the city’s demolition list.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted in Monday’s meeting to authorize Victor Gray-Lewis, director of buildings and inspections, to proceed with steps to have the building at 1820 S. Frontage Road razed after noncompliance from its owner, Luis Angel.
“It’s an eyesore the way it is,” Gray-Lewis said. “It’s on a list scheduled for demolition.”
Gray-Lewis said because the building is commercial, it would need to go through an abatement process to remove any asbestos before the city can proceed with the demolition.
He said the owner of the building had been notified 14 days before to comply with the city’s ordinances and given the opportunity to speak at the city board meeting.
“All we were asking is that they repair it or remove it,” Gray-Lewis said.
A call to Angel was not returned.
El Sombrero, which continues to be a popular eatery, operated at the old South Frontage Road site for about 15 years before moving about a block west to a new building.
The board also decided to authorize Gray-Lewis to add three homes to the demolition list because of noncompliance with city ordinances.
The homes are at 1306 and 1314 Grammar St., and 1508 Military St.
The owner of a home at 1214 Finney St. received a 90-day extension for removal of a dilapidated building, and the owner of a home at 489 Hall Road received a 30-day extension to remove a dilapidated mobile home.
Also in Monday’s meeting, the board decided to approve a request for radio advertisement from V-105.5 for the sixth annual Christmas Caroling contest set for Nov. 29 and 30 and Dec. 2 and 4.
The city will spend $700 for the ads.
