A 27-year law enforcement officer in Tallulah and Madison Parish died Tuesday of an accidental gunshot wound, authorities said this morning.

Billy Wayne Hutto was found dead at his home by a relative after his service revolver went off while cleaning it, Maj. Neal Horath of the Madison Parish Sheriff’s Office said, adding Hutto was home alone and off-duty at the time. He was 56.

Hutto, a lifelong Tallulah resident and most recently a jailer, was a 13-year veteran of the sheriff’s department and previously spent 14 years with the Tallulah Police Department, Horath said.
